Who cleans up
Who cleans up a crime scene in Colorado?
Police and the coroner investigate and then release the property. The cleaning is left to the owner, the tenant, the family or the landlord, who usually hire a private cleanup company.
Does the coroner clean up after a death?
No. The coroner or medical examiner investigates the death and takes custody of the body. Cleaning the home is not part of that role.
Is this line a cleanup company?
No. It connects your call with an independent company. See how it works.
Timing
When can cleanup start?
After police and the coroner release the scene. Before that, no one can work in it.
How long does it take?
Ask the company. A small area may take a few hours; a death that went unnoticed, with odor treatment, can take several days.
Is the phone line open at night?
Yes, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Cost and payment
How much does biohazard cleanup cost?
It depends on the area, the materials, the time that has passed and the waste. The company prices it after seeing the space. See what moves the price.
Does homeowner insurance cover it?
Sometimes. Call your insurer before work starts. See who pays for cleanup.
Does Colorado victim compensation pay for crime scene cleanup?
It depends on the judicial district. The 23rd District (Douglas County) lists crime scene cleaning. For Arapahoe, Adams and Denver, ask the program.
Safety
Is it safe to clean blood myself?
Blood can carry bloodborne pathogens. For anything beyond a small spill on a hard surface, leave it to people with protective gear.
What about mouse droppings?
The CDC says not to sweep or vacuum them and to soak them with disinfectant first.
Whenever you are ready
You can call now, or after the hardest days are behind you
There is no deadline on a phone call. Until then, keep the door to the affected room shut, keep children and pets out, and leave the cleaning to people with protective gear.
Speak with a cleanup company
The call reaches an independent company that works in your ZIP code. Describe the room, ask how they would handle it and how they set the price. Nothing is decided until you agree to it.
